deeptokyo's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo for staples... In response to an intensive two-year campaign, involving dozens of environmental and grassroots groups around the country, Staples has announced that: * It will phase out the sale of products made from endangered forests. Endangered forests include old growth, threatened forests in the US Southeast, Canada, and threatened forests on US public lands; * It will achieve a minimum average of 30% post consumer recycled content across all paper products it sells; and * Staples will create an environment position at the executive level to help implement these changes and report annually on the company's progress. This major policy change by Staples will greatly benefit the world's forests. The paper industry is the largest industrial consumer of forests worldwide. Almost half of the trees logged in the world are used to make paper. At present, millions of acres of forest are clearcut every year to make paper; but this action by Staples should slow that destruction. Staples is a driving force in the paper industry. It is the largest and fastest growing chain of office superstores in the world. If a meaningful percentage of the paper sold by industry leaders like Staples is made from recycled waste paper rather than felled endangered forests, then more of world's oldest and greatest forests will remain. Yeah!!!! for grassroots organization, I know I wrote a STERN letter to Staples a few months ago, and never got a response but thankfully they decided to stop a number of harmful practices. I say we should just grow hemp damn it, that makes great paper. Anybody down in D.C. hear me? Hemp!!! 2:44 p.m. - 2002-11-14 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
